‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania‘ directed by Shashank Khaitan is a simple, light-hearted entertainer that is no different from using the tested and tried success formula of the regular Bollywood ROM-COMs (the director has already given a super hit movie in 2014, with the same combination of lead pair and producer). Be it the characters introduction by voice-over, the acquaintance between the lead pair, the clichéd interval or the post interval drama, ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’ is a typical Bollywood romance drama that we are seeing in the recent years. But, the fact is that the director has managed to keep hold of the audience for the complete running time; the film is enjoyable in most parts and there are no boredom moments at all except for the penultimate scenes.
The writer and director team must be appreciated for talking about some important topics such as women freedom, the dowry system, the costly practices & traditions in the Indian marriages in a subtle yet effective manner. What makes ‘BKD’ lively to an extent is that even small characters like the Urmila sister-in-law and the friend character Somdev are presented memorably. These make the film an engaging watch, despite its predictability and clichés. The refreshing pair of Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt is the USP of the film, which doesn’t even remind any of their previous outings together.
The 30 minutes before the climax is the unexciting part of ‘BDM’, where the leisure pace, overdose of melodrama and the two unnecessary songs go against the entertainment quotient.
‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’ is a recommendable weekend entertainer!
